My very first trip to Thailand took place in late 2003—almost exactly a year before the devastating tsunami.
After suffering a severe workplace accident in November 2002, a friend and I decided to head out on a month-long trip to recharge and get some much-needed warmth. Destination: Phuket. Spending Christmas and New Year in a completely different tropical setting was quite an unforgettable experience.
Despite dealing with severe pain and heavy medication at the time, the trip turned out great. I met so many great people along the way—many of whom were already experienced Thailand travelers, and some were even living in Phuket at the time.
It was a wonderful, relaxed time, and that very trip sparked my deep love for Thailand, which eventually led to me living here permanently today!
